| Clubs |
We at Baldwins believe in teaching not only studies, but encourage
our children in all kinds of Extra-curricular activities. For this
purpose, we have a number of Clubs in the School, which cater to
a wide range of interests and activities. Hereunder are some of
the Clubs and the facilities they offer:
Aero
Modelling:
We have introduced Aero Modelling in a bid to make the children
understand the importance of aeroplanes. They are given lectures
in the theoretical part of flying and piloting, and they are encouraged
to make models of aircraft. Competent people from the Visvesaraya
Museum come every Friday and Saturday to instruct them in the building
of flying models.
Electronics
Club:
Here the children are taught the basics of electronics, soldering,
the various components that constitute an electronic circuit, and
are encouraged to take up small projects of their own, for example,
making a small transistor, etc. Music
Club:
Children with a love for music are encouraged to take up learning
any of the 55 instruments which are available, from the Piano to
the Trumpet to the Clarinet to the Drums, and many others. Children
with good voices are trained to sing in the Junior and Senior Choirs,
were trained teachers guide them as to their taste in music.
Collections
Club:
Children are taught the basics of Numismatics and Philately. Also
they are encouraged to make collections of their own, since collections
tell us a lot about various countries and their traditions and habits,
festivals, etc. They are also encouraged to collect anything they
think is worth collecting, and make them into a collection. Trained
people from outside the School are encouraged to come and impart
their knowledge about the various collections they have made.
Magic
Club:
Children are taught simple magic tricks, like sleight of hand, card
tricks, etc. There has been a great response for this Club, as it
is a good thing to have knowledge of a few tricks, specially at
functions. People who are proficient in the art of magic are invited
to the School to talk to the club members.
Quiz
Club:
Children with a thirst for General Knowledge are encouraged to take
part in Inter-school Competitions. Recently, our boys were placed
third in an All-Asia Quiz, and won the Nationals in the Junior Division
of a Quiz Competition. Hence, we are ready to take on the best.
Literary
Activity Club:
Those children who are interested in Creative Writing are encouraged
to pen their own poems, stories, essays, etc. We have various competitions
of intra and inter School levels, in which they are encouraged to
participate.
Debating
Club:
Here, the children are taught to look at "two sides of a coin"..
literally! They are encouraged to debate about any topic and regular
debates are conducted in the School to sharpen their skills. They
also participate in InterSchool Competitions.
Art
Club:
Children who have a talent for Art, are carefully nurtured and encouraged
to widen their skills in various disciplines like Poster Painting,Sketching,
Oil Painting, Water Colour Painting, etc. They regularly take part
in Inter-School Competitions, and are encouraged to think of Art
as a Career.
We at Baldwins believe in encouraging the various hidden talents
of our children, and hence we strive to go the extra mile to make
their school life memorable.

| Scouts |
|
To join the Scouts and Cubs, Baldwins inculcates the need to lend
a helping hand, by encouraging its students to join the Scouts and
Cubs Pack. Their motto being, "A Good Deed A Day" is well
chosen, since it teaches the boys to scout to be sensitive to other
people's needs. A true Scout is looked up to by other boys, by grown
ups, and by everyone around him, as a person who can be trusted
and will not fail to do his duty however risky or dangerous it may
be. Scouting is not an abstruse or difficult science, rather it
is a game if you take it in the right spirit. It has come to mean
a training in citizenship, through games. The summary of the Scout
Laws given by Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the movement includes
keeping promises made, being true to his country, parents, those
he is working for and those under him, being helpful to others,
being a friend and brother to all, whatever his religion or caste
or country may be, being respectful to elders, treats animals well,
does as he is ordered without question, learns to keep smiling even
when in trouble, and finally makes good use of his time, money and
everything he has.
The
four basic tenets of Scouting are Character, Health and Strength,
Handicraft and Skill, and Service to Others. In Baldwins, the Scouts
and Cubs are divided into four groups, namely the Peacocks, Lions,
Eagles and Hounds. When the first letters. of these groups are taken
out and put together, they spell H - E - L - P. A Scout must be
ready to help people in distress, and this is stressed on. Heath
and strength are nurtured by games, and sports, exercises, fitness,
etc. Scouts are taught the importance of skill, and are encouraged
to make various models, are taught the use of knots, and are taught
how to tie different knots, etc. What is stressed most is that they
must be ready to render service to others or their country, however
difficult it may seem at that time. They are also taught not to
make any distinction between rich and poor, but to render aid impartially.
The
climax of the Scouts and Cubs is the Annual Camp, which they all
look forward to. The camp develops their all round personality,
and they are kept busy in a tight program from 6 in the morning
to 10 in the night. The Campfire is looked forward to, and the Scouts
and Cubs sing, dance, play games, and generally have a good time.

| National
Cadet Corps |
The
N.C.C. has been a part of Baldwins' extra-curricular activities
for nearly 45 years. We have the Army Wing in the School, where
the cadets are trained to have loyalty for their Country. They
are also taught to render service to the Country in the Armed
Forces in times of need. The cadets are put through a rigorous
course of marching, drill, weapons training, discipline and parading
every Saturday. There '--are trained Staff Members who have taken
charge of this Department, and are there on hand to see to the
training of the cadets,
The
cadets are sent to Camps as well, to learn what it is like to
mix with cadets of other States and Cities, learn to manage by
themselves, and be independent. They are encouraged to use their
own initiative, and are regularly coached by Army Personnel, who
interact with them. Students of Baldwins are encouraged to join
the N.C.C., as it builds in them discipline, independence, and
most important, inculcates in them the desire to do good for others,
and serve the Country.

The tradition continues, and the legacy of quality sound produced
by Baldwins from time immemorial.

Singing Classes: An integral part of the curriculum, the weekly
singing classes create a sense of enthusiasm and joy for the children
from Nursery to Std. VII. Students are exposed to traditional
and contemporary classical, folk, jazz and blues songs by popular
artistes. Std. VIII learns music theory, history of musicians,
classification of Instruments and music appreciation. Stds. IX
and X do not have singing classes due to alteration in their vocal
chords.
School Choirs: The Junior and Senior Choirs are in full attendence
for all the major functions of the School. Each Choir, consisting
of 35 tender, unbroken voices produce euphoric melodies, soothing
to the ear. The Choirs have participated in several competitions,
winning laurels for the school.
School Band: The gem of the Institution, the Baldwin Boys’
High School Brass Ensemble, is an icon by itself. Being the oldest
Brass Band among schools, the tradition has continued, and will
continue. The thirty-piece ensemble is a blend of various instruments
like the trumpet, trombone, euphonium and E b tuba. The music
ranges from Marches to light rhythm and blues apart from the Gospel
Hymns and Negro Spirituals. The Band is in regular attendance
every Friday, leading the School in the School Song and the National
Anthem. The Band performs major concerts hosted by various Organizations
for various charitable causes. The Band has maintained strict
discipline in terms of dress code, attendance and practice. It
can boast of being the only School Band in Bangalore to participate
in the New Delhi Republic Day Parade twice, in the years 1963
and 1968.
This year, the Band drew applause at the Founder’s Day
Entertainment Programme, with its feet-tapping music. It enthralled
the audience by its rendition of “TIGER FEET” by James
Last.
Music Club: Students are taught various instruments free of cost
at the Music Club. The active involvement of each student expressing
their eagerness to learn an instrument brings joy and encouragement.
The students are divided into sections depending on their ability
and possession of their instruments, namely, guitar, violin, recorder,
keyboard and drums.
Music Examinations: Students who wish to obtain a Certificate
in Music are trained to appear for the annual Music Examinations
conducted by the Trinity College of Music, London and the Royal
School of Music, London. The students have excelled in the past
with distinction, and will continue to do so in future.
Music Competition: The Annual Inter-house Music Competition is
one of the most exciting Programmes in the calendar year of our
school. Students under the able leadership of their respective
house teachers train hard for a keenly contested event which is
both musical and entertaining. The competition is divided into
five categories, namely Western Group/Solo, Indian Group/Solo,
and Instrumental. The judges are usually external, and recognized
musicians in Bangalore. The House with maximum points take home
the Ponappa Rolling Trophy.
Music Faculty:
The Music Faculty is ably represented by Dr. Rohit Sailas, Ms.
Rebecca Thomas, Mr. Ganesh and Mr. Carson Daniels, who more than
once have proved their worth.
