History
One hundred and twenty-three years of Baldwins

What's in a Name?

The Baldwin Schools are named after their benefactor, a philanthropist, John Baldwin of Berea, Ohio, U.S.A., who had a vision, which saw him start six educational institutions, the last of which were the Baldwin Schools.
The name "Baldwin" descends from a royal lineage, and is of German origin. It means "Bold Winner”.
One sees a glorious panorama of personalities in the annals of Baldwins, guided by a strong sense of purpose, unity, loyalty, grit and determination.

They were the original patrons, the founding fathers, the principals and staff, who kept going inspite of many odd and difficulties listed hereunder:

1878

The lamp was first lit by Mrs. Marie Mulligan Oldham, wife of Rev. William Fitzjames Oldham. She started a school in their home at No. 2, Alexandra Street. It’s aim was to provide schooling for English speaking Methodist children and to train them in the Christian faith.

1879 The school was transferred to the vestry of the Richmond Town Methodist Church. It was placed under the then Pastor, the Rev. J.E. Robinson.
1880 The Methodist Episcopal School was formally opened in February on land rented along Hosur Road - a part of the current campus. The first Principal, Rev. Marion B. Kirk from the East Ohio Conference, served in all capacities in the school -as householder, administrator, teacher, games master and musician!
1881 Rev. Ira A. Richards served as Principal from August 1880 to 1883. The stark reality of a few students, no salaries for staff and a bank balance of 'Nil' did not discourage him. He was responsible for increasing the strength of the school sizably. In this year, the first Board of Directors was also appointed to govern the school.
1882 This was a ‘Jackpot’ year for the School. Mr. John Baldwin, at that time aged 83, presented the school with $ 3,000 to acquire land and buildings. The rented property was purchased and renovated as a dormitory for boys. The South India Regional Conference was requested to provide Rs. 6,000 to purchase some more buildings and hire two more teachers. Buttrick House was acquired in 1882.
1891 Rev. T.R. Toussaint, the then Principal, refused to close down the school when the Government stopped the Grant-in-aid to the School, which had been going on since 1884. He was the first non-missionary to be appointed as Principal, and served from 1891 to 1898. He came from Ceylon, and joined the School in 1883. During his tenure, 'The Baldwinian' was started, and the Baldwin Literary Society formed. The School also became self-supportive.
1896 The first Crest was designed. The words, 'Reverentia Jehovae est Caput Sapientiae' became the watchwords of the School.
1898 The Presiding Elder, the Rev. J.B. Buttrick, reported that 1898 was Baldwins' "'most prosperous year in history. The football team won the Inter School Tournament for the first time.
1902 Mr. P.V. Roberts was the first "Old Boy' to become the Principal of Baldwins High School. He served in the School as a Teacher, and later as Headmaster, before going on to become the Principal.
1903 The girls left Baldwins' High School to form a school of their own. Their first Principal was Ms. Urdell Montgomery.
1908 Oldham Hall was built in honour of Rev.and Mrs.Oldham, the original founders of the School.
1927 Mr. C.N. Weston became the Principal of Baldwin Boys' High School.
1933 Mr. Weston met Mr. Pfeiffer, a businessman in New York, promised to donate $ 5,000 towards the School's debts, provided the same amount could be raised locally. Mr. Weston and Mr. Anderson took this up as a challenge, and literally held out the "begging bowl". They succeeded. Which is why Baldwins is still here today-123 years old.
1935 As long as Baldwin Boys' High School exists, the name Pfeiffer will always be remembered. Mr and Mrs Pfeiffer donated $ 5,000 towards the swimming pool and the playground, which was subsequently named after them. The Pfeiffer Swimming Pool was inaugurated in August. The first Aquatic Sports Meet was held the following year. Commencement Exercises were held for the first time in the same year, ie. 1936.
1941 The Pfeiffer Memorial Playground was dedicated this year.
1946 A Crucial year for the School. Mr. Weston and Mr.Anderson, the Associate Principal, had new plans. The Pfeiffer Memorial Playground was extended, a Book Room, a Masters' Room, a Games Room and new classrooms ware added.
1956 The Constance Weston Hall was inaugurated in honour of Mrs. Weston.
1960 Mr and Mrs. Weston and Mr and Mrs. Anderson relinquished office. Dr. E.B. Finch was appointed Principal.
1962 The Foundation stone for the Lincoln Hall was laid. The new School Crest started being used. The Lincoln Hall was dedicated in 1963, during which the portrait of Abraham Lincoln and his son Ted was unveiled. The N.C.C. Platoon Brass Band participated in the Republic Day parade this year, led by the Music Master J.T. William Joseph.
1970 The I.C.S.E. Examination was introduced for the first time.
1976 The Foundation Stone for the Gokavi Block was laid.
1980 Baldwins is 100 years old! The celebrations were unprecedented and joyous ones.
